The Sacrificial Love of God {Advent Devotional}

By Bill McIntyre

Over the next few days we are looking at the love of God by going through John 3:16.  You can read the first part here.

The lake and the mountains have become my landscape, my real world. (1)

that he gave

How did God love us?

He loved us by giving, by serving, by sacrificing. So here we learn something important about the nature of true love.

Galatians 5:21 gives us a place for love in the fruit of the spirit:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

I would suggest to you that Love is first on this list because I do not see how we can have any of the others without love being first:

Love is Joy overflowing

Love is Peace calming

Love is Patience waiting

Love is Kindness smiling

Love is Goodness benefitting

Love is Faithfulness caring

Love is Gentleness touching

Love is Self-control strengthening

This is the love that God shows for us and it is a love that was shown in when he sent his son to die for us on that cross. Our sins could only be paid for by a sacrifice and God gave his son as that sacrifice so that all who believed in him could have eternal life.

Some people think they love others because of what those people do for them or how them make them feel.  But God shows us that true love has nothing to do with what you can do for me, but everything to do with what I can do for you.

Heavenly Father, let my love for you be sacrificial. Let my love follow the teaching of the fruit of the spirit and be joyful, peace-loving, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and full of self control and let my love for my brothers and sisters in Christ be like this also. Let it be Unconditional and Sacrificial. Amen.

  3. This reminds me of John 13:35 “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” We as Christians must get more concerned about showing the love of Christ instead of the do’s and don’ts of Christianity. Great post!

Amen! I absolutely enjoyed this one! Helen, could you please place the definition of Love as a pinnable? I would come back and pin when it is done!
Hugs and regards to your Dad, Bill.

  5. This is a great reminder that we need to be filled with the holy Spirit and we can’t fulfill the fruit of the spirit with out have first having Christ Love.

  6. Praying for a sacrificial kind of love and life lived for Him is so amazing. Kind of scary to pray that, because God will give you excellent growth opportunities, but I know I’ve learned so much about living like Jesus when I put my self on the shelf.
