Hear. Love. Do {A Conclusion to James}

Ah, friends, here we are at the end of what has been a six week journey through James! I can hardly believe the time has gone, but so it has!

When I set about starting this study, I tried to think of a short phrase that could encapsulate what this study was going to be about. The Bible is so rich and full of wisdom, I am sure we could all study James again and find ourselves looking at different verses in different ways.

However, the words Hear. Love. Do. really stuck with me as I looked at the book of James.

We have seen how important it is for us to stand firm when we are faced with trials, take care to control our tongues, work to take care of each other without favouritism, worry not about tomorrow but rather look to being effective for the Lord today.

Truly we are called to hear the word, love each other, and do what God has told us.

Let’s look together at these last few verses in James 5:19-20.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.

Thoughts for Today

  1. What are we to do for each other according to these verses? What role do we have in keeping each other on the right track? How are we to make sure we grow and stay close to truth?
  2. What part ought we to play in the lives of those who are not yet saved? How does this verse remind us that there may be people in our own fellowships who are not actually saved? What are we to keep doing?
  3. What great benefit do we have when we turn from error and embrace the truth of the gospel?

Prayers for Today

  • Today, let’s thank God for this book we have read, for the encouragement we have found on these pages of James to hear the word, love one another and do as the Lord says.

Grace and Love
