Always an Antidote

Are you still with us? We’re looking at James Chapter 4 this week, and today we’ll be taking a closer look at verses 5-10.

Let’s look:

Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud
but shows favour to the humble.”

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

Thoughts for Today

  1. Look at verse 5: He gives us more grace. What should our response be to know this truth? How should it affect the way we live?
  2. These verses are full of imperatives; James is very clear with the instructions here. Yesterday we saw how our lives deteriorate when we are walking with the world rather than God. What do these instructions tell us to do, and how do they help us?
  3. What encouragement can you take from the fact that if we resist the devil he will free, and if we humble ourselves, God will lift us up?

Prayers for Today

  • Let’s pray today that God will help us take these necessary steps to keep our eyes fixed on Him.

Grace and Love
