Choose Your Tongue

As we continue our study of James, let’s look today at Chapter 3, verses 6-8.

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind,  but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

Thoughts for Today

  1. James uses strong and sobering language to put across his point: Fire, evil, corrupts, hell, deadly, poison. Why do you think he does this? What is his message about the tongue?
  2. What warnings are there in this passage about the words we speak?
  3. What does James mean by a “restless evil”? How can we guard against our own tongues being like this?

Prayers for Today

  • Pray today for continued wisdom when it comes to how we use our voices.
