Bringing up Children in the Lord

So far we have seen in Ephesians how Paul has encouraged us to live in unity with each other in the church, in our households as husbands and wives, and here we get a word to children as well.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise),  “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”  Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Thoughts for Today

  1. Children are required to obey their parents, but the words ‘in the Lord’ are added. What do you think this means?
  2. Why is it important to use scripture train children to obey? How does this help us make sure we are doing so ‘in the Lord’?
  3. How do we teach children to “honour” their parents? What are the different ways they can show ‘honour’?
  4. What responsibility do parents have, as well as bringing them up to obey? What must parents make sure they do not do, and why do you think this is the case?

Prayers for Today

  • Who are the children and parents in your life? Are you in the midst of parenting, or are you an empty nester with grandchildren? Are you hoping to parent some day? Do you have children of your own who are now parenting? How can we pray for the children and parents in our life today, whatever their age?
