Let there be thanksgiving

So we saw yesterday how walking in love means to take Christ as our ultimate example; and that practical living-out-love means it matters how we act and it matters how we talk.

In today’s passage (Ephesians 5:3-5), Paul further exemplifies this:

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.  For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

So, let’s think on the following things today:

Thoughts for Today

  1. What particular behaviours does Paul draw attention to as being unsuitable for believers? What do you think he means by “must not even be named among you”?
  2. In what ways are we to be careful with our talk? What does Paul tell us is unsuitable?
  3. What should we turn to our conversation to that will help us keep our actions and talk focussed right?
  4. What is the warning we must take heed of? How does Paul use these behaviours to draw attention to the differences between Christ’s followers and unbelievers?

Prayers for Today

  • All of us have our struggles with different things, in different ways. When we consider the fill spectrum of what these behaviours might suggest, then maybe sometimes we come up guilty. Let’s take time to pray for God’s help in keeping out actions and conversations pure and right before God.

Grace and Love
