Grace and Life {A Study in Ephesians}

Bible Study Hints and Tips

Some days Bible study feels like a mountain to climb – have you ever felt this? We can come across conflicting viewpoints, differing opinions, various translations and sometimes this can feel overwhelming.

The important thing to remember here is that we are all on the same journey. I know I have changed my mind over things as time has passed and as the Holy Spirit works in me. And this is ok. We are works in progress!

So as we embark on this study together, we can remember that it is through reading, prayer, cheering each other on, that we can grow in grace and knowledge.

With that said, here are some of my hints and tips that may help you over the next 6 weeks.

There will be no printouts during this study.  All questions and prompts will be available via the blog, so it may be a good idea to invest in a journal for your own note taking and thoughts. While I would encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas through this study together either via Blog comments or Facebook, it’s always great to have a record to look back on and flick through should you need it.

I particularly like the notebooks below. They have tabs so you can divide your study into sections – these notebooks were only £2 each and I totally love them!

Bible Journaling

This is fairly new to me, I don’t know about you. I have seen all these amazing pictures all over Pinterest of people with journaling Bibles.  Google it – there are some amazing ideas and pictures. Below is a photo of mine.

The idea is to read and write at the same time, picking out key verses, mulling them over.  If you’re anything like me and you enjoy taking notes when people speak, then you may well love this too…I am a doodler! I have found it really enjoyable to sit with my Bible, a few coloured pens and highlighters (and yes, okay, maybe a coffee) to pull out, write out, draw key verses.

There are lots of available styles of Journal Bibles should you be interested.

Pressures of time is one of the greatest problems many of us face today. We are busy people with busy lives and even our greatest intentions are often affected the most by time running out – I know mine often are!

This Bible Study is designed to keep us daily in the word with small chunks to mull over during the day. I will always post early in the morning for those of you who enjoy Bible Study first thing, but whenever you find your own time is great.

Reading Around

There are plenty of good guides, overviews, sermons, notes, etc etc on the Internet to supplement your study. If you find yourself with some extra time, see what else you can find on the verses we are going to be looking at – what do other people say/think? What ideas have other people had? What contextual information is there that helps us to understand the verses?

Joining In

One of my sincerest prayers is that there is community in this study. We need not be isolated because we are all sitting in different rooms in different parts of the world – this could be a great blessing if we interact with and encourage each other! Taking time to tap a message, a question, a word of encouragement is one of the wonderful benefits of online study, so get stuck in! Let’s be together wherever we are!

Thoughts for Today

  1. What are you going to do to prepare yourself for studying next week? Is there anything you need to get before we begin?
  2. What would you like your role to be? Are you going to try and participate with others online?
  3. Are you going to be forming any new habits through this study? Remind yourself, what goals did you set that will help you over the coming 6 weeks?

Prayers for Today

How can we pray for the online community we are going to be a part of?

Will we be trying to study with other women “in the flesh” and start a group?
