New Beginnings

So, today is the first day of school where I live.  It’s also the first day of my new job.  So here I am, with a wealth of new opportunity at my fingertips, hoping…praying to make the best of it.

1st day of school

My children go today into new classes, into a new academic year, with fresh expectations and an abundance of things unlearned.  I could do much to learn from that enthusiasm and zest – to seize each day, each hour, each minute with the same eagerness.

Oh, but I know, life is so much more mundane when you’re a grown-up! We don’t spend our days making things fizz and crackle, or fill pages and walls with colour and paint and chalk…we have laundry and cleaning, and we have jobs where we go and do the same thing we did yesterday, and we have to think about shopping for dinner, or … well, I’m sure you can fill in the blank.  And it’s oh so easy to forget the opportunity of a day, and when we don’t forget, sometimes we don’t even see one.

But there’s that smile that person needs to see when you go into the shop.  There’s that friend you can ring and lend a voice and an ear to.  There are the wounded and sick who need a prayer…we are surrounded by opportunities to smile and talk and listen and pray…and sometimes these are the things people need the most.

So I sit here, with such relative comfort, blessed beyond measure.  I have everything I need to see an opportunity and take it.

Whatever your circumstances today, God has a plan for you.  Your circumstances might be filling your heart to overflowing with joy, or they may be weighing you down so you feel you are barely keeping your head above water.  My prayer for us today is that we see every opportunity in every circumstance, to grip it with both hands and make small changes in our small corners.
